Marble, travertine, and limestone are calcium-carbonate based minerals. Calcium carbonate reacts immediately with acid — including food acids, cleaning product acids, and the acetic acid in vinegar.

There are two categories of grout sealer: penetrating (impregnating) sealer and topical sealer.


Penetrating sealer soaks into the pores of the grout and cures to create a water-repellent and soil-resistant barrier within the grout structure itself.


It does not sit on the surface, so it does not peel, cloud, or create a visible film. It typically lasts 3 to 5 years in residential settings before reapplication is needed.


Topical sealer sits on the surface of the grout as a coating. It looks glossy initially, provides good stain resistance, but peels and wears over time and requires more frequent reapplication.

Bleach On Grout
The Honest Answer

Bleach whitens grout by oxidizing the chromatic compounds that give dark-stained grout its appearance — the color lightens temporarily. But the soil that caused the darkening is still in the grout.


The bleach has not removed it; it has chemically altered its appearance. Over repeated applications, bleach degrades the calcium-silicate binder in grout, making grout more porous and more susceptible to re-staining.


The grout lightens for a few weeks, then darkens faster than before the bleach treatment because the pore structure is more open.


The correct approach is professional extraction to physically remove the embedded soil, followed by penetrating sealer to reduce future soiling.

Why Bathroom Grout and Kitchen Grout Fail Differently

The grout in your shower and the grout in your kitchen are degrading for completely different reasons, and they need different approaches. Shower grout battles constant moisture: every shower deposits a film of soap, body oil, and minerals, and because the surface rarely fully dries between uses, that film feeds mold and mildew that root into the porous grout.


The black or pink staining in shower grout is biological — living organisms in the grout pores — which is why bleach appears to work (it kills the surface layer) but the staining returns (the roots survive deeper down).


 Kitchen grout battles grease and traffic: airborne cooking grease settles onto the floor and combines with foot traffic soil into a sticky, dark film that ordinary mopping smears rather than removes. Knowing which problem we're solving determines the chemistry and method — a grease-cutting approach for the kitchen, a biological-and-mineral approach for the shower.
