Reading Your Furniture's Cleaning Code
What W, S, SW and X Actually Mean
Every piece of upholstered furniture manufactured in the United States is required to carry a cleaning code tag — usually located on a label sewn to the underside of a seat cushion or to the furniture frame under the cushion. Most homeowners have never read this label. It is the single most important piece of information for safe furniture cleaning.
W means water-based cleaning methods only. This is the most common code — it covers most microfiber, many polyester blends, and cotton-polyester blended upholstery. S means solvent or dry-cleaning method only. Water applied to an S-code fabric will cause shrinking, staining, or permanent water rings.
Many natural fiber fabrics — silk, acetate, some velvets — are S-coded. SW means either water-based or solvent methods can be used. X means vacuum only — no liquid of any kind. Some vintage or very delicate fabrics are X-coded; applying any liquid, including plain water, damages them.
Using the wrong method for the code can permanently damage the fabric in ways that cannot be undone. We verify the cleaning code before any solution is applied to your furniture.
When you apply water to a spot on upholstery and let it air-dry, the water does not evaporate evenly from the center outward. It migrates outward across the fabric surface as it evaporates.
The soil that was suspended in the water travels with it and deposits at the outer edge of the evaporating moisture boundary — creating a ring that is larger and more visible than the original spot. This is the mechanism behind the frustrating experience of cleaning a small spot and ending up with a large ring.
Professional cleaning addresses the whole section rather than the spot alone, eliminating the evaporation boundary effect that creates rings.
If you have DIY spot-cleaning rings on microfiber or other upholstery, professional cleaning of the whole cushion or section typically resolves them. Call (517) 582-1083 and we will assess whether your specific situation is treatable.
Why Water Rings Get Worse
The DIY Spot-Cleaning Problem
We clean all W and SW-coded fabric upholstery: microfiber (the most common residential upholstery fabric in the Lansing area), polyester and polyester blends, cotton and cotton blends, nylon, chenille, velvet (code-dependent — some velvets are S-code), and synthetic leather-look textiles.
We clean genuine leather with pH-neutral leather-appropriate cleaner followed by conditioner — cleaning without conditioning leaves leather more susceptible to cracking. We clean faux leather and vinyl upholstery.
Bonded leather — a thin polyurethane coating over split leather, often used in less expensive furniture — requires very careful handling because the thin coating layer can crack or peel if cleaned with incompatible chemistry or excessive moisture. We assess bonded leather individually and discuss realistic outcomes before starting.

Pet Urine on Upholstery
Why Surface Treatment Is Not Enough
Pet urine on a sofa cushion soaks through the fabric into the cushion foam within seconds of the initial accident.
The foam acts as a reservoir — it holds the urine long after the fabric surface appears dry. If you clean only the fabric surface, the odor source — uric acid crystals in the foam — remains. Humidity causes those crystals to off-gas ammonia, which is why the odor seems to cycle: it is less noticeable in dry weather and returns during humid periods.
For moderate contamination, enzyme treatment injected into the foam addresses the source rather than masking it. For severe contamination where the foam is fully saturated, cushion replacement is the only option for complete odor elimination.
The fabric itself can often be cleaned successfully; the question is always whether the foam beneath it is treatable or past the point where enzyme treatment can reach sufficient saturation.
We assess at the job site before starting and give you an honest estimate of outcome and options.
Our Upholstery Cleaning Process
Step 1: Pre-Inspection
Step 2: Pre-Vacuum
Pet hair and dry particulate soil are removed by pre-vacuuming before any liquid is applied. Dry removal first is essential.
Step 3: Method Selection
Based on the cleaning code and fabric type, we select the appropriate water-based or solvent-based method.
Step 4: Spot Pre-Treatment
Step 5: Cleaning Pass
We clean systematically by section, ensuring thorough cleaning beyond just visible soiling spots.
Step 6: Extraction & Grooming
Moisture is extracted and the fabric is groomed to restore nap direction and speed up drying.
How Upholstery Actually Gets Dirty
And Why It Hides It
Upholstery soils differently than carpet, and understanding why explains a lot about cleaning results.
Three forces work on your furniture simultaneously: body oils, airborne soil, and friction. Body oils (and hair products, lotions, and the natural oils our skin produces) transfer to the fabric anywhere we make contact — armrests, headrest areas, seat cushions.
These oils are invisible at first but they attract and bind airborne dust, which is why the headrest and arms of a light-colored sofa darken in a gradient over time rather than all at once. Friction from sitting and shifting grinds that oil-bound soil deeper into the fiber.
The reason a sofa can look only "a little dingy" while actually holding significant soil is that the oils darken the fabric uniformly and gradually — your eye adjusts to it.
We often don't realize how dirty upholstery was until it's clean and sitting next to a section that hasn't been done yet.
Furniture near a window in a Michigan home takes UV exposure that weakens fabric fibers and fades dyes over years — and weakened, sun-exposed fabric cleans differently and more delicately than protected fabric.
Households with smokers, frequent candle use, or heavy cooking accumulate a film of oily residue on all soft surfaces; this residue yellows light fabrics and holds odor, and it requires a degreasing pre-treatment that standard upholstery cleaning skips.
Woodstove and fireplace homes — common across mid-Michigan — deposit fine soot that settles into upholstery over a heating season. When we inspect your furniture, we're reading these histories in the fabric, because they change the cleaning approach.

Why Sunlight, Smoke & Cooking Matter for Upholstery
Honesty matters here. Some upholstery problems are not cleaning problems. Fabric that has worn through to show the backing or foam cannot be restored by cleaning — that's reupholstery. Cushions that have lost their loft and gone flat are a foam problem, not a soil problem.
Dye that has faded from sun exposure is permanent. Pet damage where claws have pulled and frayed the weave is structural. And some older or bargain-grade fabrics are simply too unstable to clean safely — the dyes bleed or the fabric shrinks regardless of method.
We tell you when you're in one of these situations before we start, because the worst outcome is paying for cleaning that was never going to deliver what you hoped.

Frequently Asked Questions
Upholstery Cleaning in Lansing
How much does sofa and couch cleaning cost in Lansing?
Sofa cleaning typically ranges from $120 to $200, sectional sofas from $175 to $300, and loveseats from $85 to $150. Prices may vary based on the condition and fabric type. For a free estimate, call (517) 582-1083.What are the W, S, SW, X cleaning codes and where do I find them?
These codes are usually found on a tag sewn to the underside of a seat cushion or the furniture frame. W means water-based cleaning only, S means solvent only, SW means either, and X means vacuum only. Always match your cleaning method to the code to avoid damage. Can pet urine smell be permanently removed from a sofa?
Yes, in most cases where the foam cushion hasn't been fully saturated. We use enzyme treatment to target the uric acid crystals causing the odor. If the foam is saturated, replacement may be necessary, and we will assess this on-site before starting. My microfiber couch has water rings from spot-cleaning — can that be fixed?
Yes, cleaning the entire section or cushion face instead of just the ring area will eliminate the evaporation boundary that caused the ring. This is a common issue we resolve with satisfying results. Is it safe to clean a leather sofa?
Yes. We use leather-appropriate pH-neutral cleaner followed by leather conditioner. Cleaning without conditioning removes protective oils and leaves leather more susceptible to drying and cracking over time. We never use steam or alkaline products on leather.
How long until upholstery is dry after cleaning?
2 to 4 hours for most fabric types. Microfiber dries faster; natural fibers and heavier fabric constructions take longer. We recommend keeping pets off cleaned furniture until fully dry.
What should I do to prepare before you arrive?
Remove loose cushions from upright and prop them separately so we can clean all sides. Clear small items from seat surfaces. Place pets in another room during cleaning — both for their comfort and to prevent tracking on wet fabric. Standard pieces of furniture are moved as needed during cleaning — electronics, glass-top furniture, and very heavy items we ask clients to move prior to our arrival.
Why does my sofa look only a little dirty but the water comes out black when you clean it?
Body oils darken fabric uniformly and gradually, so your eye adjusts to it over time — the soil is genuinely there, it just hides well. Those invisible oils bind airborne dust to the fibers, and the soil only becomes obvious when a freshly cleaned section sits next to one we haven't done yet. The black water in our extraction tank is the soil that was hiding in plain sight.
My furniture is near a window and the fabric feels weak — can it still be cleaned?
Yes, but sun-weakened fabric requires gentler methods. Years of UV exposure break down fibers and fade dyes, leaving the fabric more fragile than it looks. We assess fiber strength before selecting an approach — using lower moisture, gentler agitation, and conservative chemistry — and we tell you honestly if a piece is too far gone to clean safely.
